Southern Stars and Stampede doing well in Carrollton

In the GRPA Mite boys live pitch state baseball tournament in Carrollton, the Effingham Southern Stars, coached by Bobby Fears and the Effingham Stampede, coached by Kevin Brown, won their respective opening games Wednesday.

The Stars defeated Baldwin County No. 2 14-2. Derek Hendrix, Evan Fears, Slade Johnson and Kevin "Bam Bam" Smith each scored two runs for Effingham. Caleb Overstreet earned the win. The Stars play Carrollton at noon Thursday.

The Stampede defeated Baldwin County No. 1 4-3. K.C. Brown pitched for the win. Landon Shelton, Mason Pevey, Connor James and Dyllan Wiley scored for Effingham. James had two RBIs. The Stampede plays Tift County at noon Thursday.

If both Effingham County teams win Thursday then they will play each other.
