Stampede, Stars shine at state

Two Effingham County Recreation and Parks teams are playing well in the GRPA Mite boys baseball state tournament in Carrollton.

The Southern Stars, coached by Bobby Fears, defeated Baldwin County 14-2 to open the tournament Wednesday. Derek Hendrix, Evan Fears, Slade Johnson and Kevin “Bam Bam” Smith each scored two runs for Effingham. Caleb Overstreet earned the win.

The Stars defeated Carrollton 4-2 on Thursday. Josh Gillam pitched a complete game — six innings — for the win, striking out 12 batters and walking two.

They beat Tift County 9-1 Friday to advance to the  championship. Scheldon Paulk earned the win. Hendrix and Michael Rohland each scored two runs.

The Stars advanced to the championship, but the game was not complete in time for press.

The Effingham Stampede, coached by Kevin Brown, beat Baldwin County No. 1 4-3 Wednesday. K.C. Brown pitched for the win. Landon Shelton, Mason Pevey, Connor James and Dyllan Wiley scored for Effingham. James had two RBIs.

The Stampede lost 2-0 Thursday to Tift County, but rebounded later in the evening to defeat Baldwin No. 2 12-0. Harrison Joiner earned the win. K.C. Brown went 2-for-3, Will Hodges went 1-for-1 with a triple and James went 1-for-2 with a double.

They defeated Carroll County 14-6 Friday. K.C. Brown earned the win and Joiner had the save. Caleb Gonsalves led the Stampede with three runs and Shelton had three RBIs.
