SPRINGFIELD, Ga. — Dr. Yancy Ford, superintendent of Effingham County Schools, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Georgia School Superintendents Association President’s Award.

The annual award honors a superintendent who demonstrates exceptional leadership, innovative practices and a commitment to student success. Ford was nominated by peers in the First District Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA), reflecting the respect he has earned from fellow education leaders across the region.

“Dr. Ford is someone we all look to for advice and wisdom,” said Dr. Jim Thompson, superintendent of Screven County Schools and president of the First District RESA Board of Control. “His leadership continues to inspire all of us.”

Dr. Bubba Longgrear, superintendent of Candler County Schools and president of GSSA, added: “Dr. Ford is a leader. He puts students first and is respected across our state for the work he has led in Effingham County.”

Although the award was announced during GSSA’s Bootstrap Conference in April, Ford was unable to attend the event due to a family commitment. True to form, colleagues said, Ford prioritized supporting one of his sons at a school activity, and news of the award remained quiet until now.

The honor was formally presented during the first Effingham County Board of Education meeting of the school year on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Richard Smith, executive director of First District RESA, surprised Ford with the award in front of board members, district leaders and staff.

“Dr. Ford’s innovative leadership, consistent focus on student achievement and commitment to growing a strong school system make him a natural choice for this recognition,” Smith said. “Effingham County is fortunate to have such a dedicated and visionary superintendent at the helm.”

Under Ford’s leadership, Effingham County Schools has seen steady gains in student achievement, driven by collaborative partnerships, strategic planning and a student-first approach.
