State and local authorities have recaptured an Effingham County Prison inmate who slipped away from a work detail early Friday afternoon.
James Correia IV was a member of a prison work detail on litter cleanup duty along Highway 119 near Roberts Road north of Springfield when he asked to relieve himself. He went behind the woodline and ducked down out of sight from corrections officers, according to reports.
Correia is 29 years old and is serving 12 years for four counts of first degree forgery. Correia’s sentence began Aug. 17, 2010, and his maximum release date was Dec. 1, 2022. He was recaptured on Highway 119 near mile marker 14 and now faces additional charges.
Warden Ronald Spears said Correia had not been a problem as an inmate and did not appear to have any family problems.
“I’m curious myself what made him run,” Spears said.
State Department of Corrections officers, Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies, Georgia State troopers and Springfield Police officers joined in the search, as did a state helicopter.
Tracking canines had a trace on Correia before having to be called off because of the extreme heat. Temperatures soared to almost 100 degrees, making conditions difficult for men and dogs on the pursuit.
