Residents will soon have a chance to alter the recreation landscape in Effingham County for years to come.
The Effingham County Board of Commissioners will seek public input in early 2023 before finalizing its parks and recreation master plan, which will include concept layouts for all county-owned parks and boat landings.
Dates for the hearings haven’t been set by County Manager Tim Callanan urged the public to watch for the announcements.
“Every park is getting touched as a result of the SPLOST,” he said.
In 2021, Effingham County voters opted to continue a one-percent SPLOST. It is expected to generate $80 million over six years and will also be used for other county-wide services, including the court system, social services, administration, tax commissioner and others.
The SPLOST continuation took effect in June.
Veterans Park of Effingham County, located across from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office on Ga. Hwy 122 in Springfield, is currently being enhanced by the addition of restrooms. Planters Communications LLC funded the bulk of the $32,000 through a grant.
The Sand Hill Complex at 300 Stagecoach Ave. in Guyton is set for an extensive renovation.
“We are going to do the entrance first simply because it’s being used a way to pick up kids from Sand Hill Elementary,” Callanan said.
Even the state-of-the-art Clarence Morgan Complex gymnasium is being improved.
“It has drawn rave reviews but the acoustics could use some attention,” Callanan said. “The board has approved a contract to install sound dampening throughout the gym.”
