Guyton, Ga. — At long last, the streak is over.
The South Effingham Mustangs (1-2) ended a 13-game losing skid Friday night, outlasting Lakeside in overtime for a 20-14 victory. The win was especially sweet after last year’s lopsided 49-7 loss to the Panthers.
This time, the Mustangs sealed the outcome with defense and determination. After Lakeside got the ball first in overtime, linebacker Corey Woods came up with a key interception. On the next offensive series, running back Khyran White — who finished with more than 100 yards on the ground — scored his second touchdown of the night.
Woods also provided an early spark in the first half, catching quarterback Liam Coburn’s first career touchdown pass.
“This is a big win for us,” assistant coach Dustin Neal said. “We’re going to enjoy it and then get ready for next week.”
Next up: a rivalry showdown with Effingham County.
