SEMS softball team keeps unbeaten streak intact

Cate Anderson hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and South Effingham Middle School kept its perfect season alive with a 7-6 win over previously unbeaten Ebenezer Middle.

Anderson was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and scored two runs. Mallory Ferguson was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Mariah Freeman also drove in a run, and Kaity White, Amy Jameson, Hannah Arrington and Katie Kussow each scored a run. Kussow also pitched four innings, allowing no earned runs. Freeman gave up two earned runs in three innings.

SEMS won the second game of the doubleheader 5-3 as Brooke Strickland went 1-for-2 with one RBI and Ansley Brown was 1-for-1. Hannah Schurman scored twice and Taylor Ross and Naomi Sapp each scored a run. Rami Mesmer drove in a run, and she and Olivia Laverenz allowed no earned runs and struck out three.

SEMS ran its region record to 6-0 with an 11-3 win over Burke County. Kussow, Anderson, Jameson, Strickland, Ferguson, Freeman and Reagan Deal each had one hit. Kussow, Strickland and Alexis Studier scored two runs each. White added one RBI.

Mesmer and Freeman combined to handle the pitching duties. Sapp, Anderson, Brown, Freeman and Ferguson also scored.
