South Effingham Girls Beat Effingham County 59-29 in Tourney

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. — South Effingham’s girls defeated county rival Effingham County 59-29 in the opening round of the Class 5A Region 1 basketball tournament Saturday afternoon for their third win over the Mustangs this season.

South (14-12) advanced to play second-seeded Brunswick in the quarterfinals Monday.

Effingham County saw its season end at 6-18.

The Mustangs scored the first six points and led 18-4 after the first period. Effingham County trimmed a 20-point deficit to 14 in the second quarter, but South opened the third quarter with 17 straight points to make it 50-16 and end any Rebel hopes.

Kyla Shuman led South with 17 points, and Hayden Johanson added 10.

Aiyana Tolbert had eight points for Effingham County.
