Frank Manker scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, and the South Effingham Mustangs defeated the Effingham County Rebels 18-13 before an overflow crowd at Rebel Field on Friday night.

The Mustangs had two touchdowns from their special teams unit. Manker scored on a dazzling 98-yard kickoff return after the Rebels had taken the lead on Steven Tarpley’s 2-yard touchdown run. Tanner Burch had a 57-yard touchdown run on a fake punt in the third quarter to cut Effingham’s lead to 13-12.

“Special teams won it for us,” Mustangs coach Greg Manior said.

South Effingham remained unbeaten with the victory, going to 5-0 on the season and winning its inaugural game as a member of Region 2-AAAA. Effingham County fell to 2-3 and 0-1 in the region.

South Effingham also leads the series between the two rivals 8-7.
