Effingham County schools kindergarten registration begins March 31

The Effingham County Board of Education has scheduled Kindergarten registration for the week of March 31–April 4.
Each elementary school will set their schedule within that week. Please contact the school that the child will attend to schedule an appointment for the registration and testing.

Students currently enrolled in a pre-K, Head Start or the Pre-School Intervention program will be evaluated at the program site. Parents of these children do not have to schedule an appointment to register their child as the child is already enrolled in the school system.

Field trips to the elementary schools they will attend are planned for later this spring.

A child must be five years of age on or before Sept. 1, to begin kindergarten for the 2008-09 school year.

A 15-to-20-minute test will be administered to assess each prospective kindergarten student’s readiness skills; therefore, the child must accompany the parent to the appointment.

Parents should bring the following items to the appointment:
• Birth certificate (not the “Record of Live Birth”)
• Immunization record - including the Hepatitis B vaccination
• Certificate of eye, ear and dental screening
• Proof of residency — i.e., a utility receipt containing the parent’s name and street or road address. Post Office box numbers are not accepted as proof of residence.
• Social Security card

The Effingham County Health Department is recommending that parents using the Health Department for their child’s immunizations not wait until the Kindergarten registration dates to take care of this matter.

The Health Department provides immunizations from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
