STATESBORO — Eight students from Effingham County were among the more than 150 outstanding high school seniors recently invited to attend Georgia Southern University’s Scholars Day.

Scholars Day is an invitation-only event that enables incoming students to meet Georgia Southern President Brooks Keel, learn more about student organizations, participate in campus and residence hall tours and interview for a variety of academic scholarships and the University Honors Program.

The following Effingham students were among the best and brightest high school seniors to attend the event, sponsored by the Office of Admissions:

Bayley Morgan of Clyo

Erin Bendig of Guyton

Courtney Crosby of Rincon

Logan Hutcheson of Rincon

Cody Morgan of Rincon

Patrick Todd of Rincon

Kirstin Zarkadas of Rincon

Lonny Gleaton of Springfield

To receive an invitation, students were required to score a minimum of 1300 on the SAT, or 29 on the ACT, with a strong academic average of 3.0 or above in high school courses.

“This event was intended to help prospective students decide if Georgia Southern is the right fit for them,” said Amy Smith, director for the Office of Admissions. “Prospective students were able to interact with current students, faculty and staff throughout the weekend and ask many questions. Additionally, some students were offered valuable scholarship dollars to help offset the cost of attendance. Scholarships can range from one-time $500 awards to four-year renewable full tuition awards.”
