Guyton Elementary held its first Quick Think-a-thon on Friday. Two contestants from each second grade class were chosen to compete. Judging the contest was Charla Connelly, Angie Roberts and Jacquelyn Jones.

Out of the 14 students competing, three winners and two alternates were selected to represent Guyton Elementary School in the Effingham County Quick Think-a-thon on March 28 in Springfield. The winners were Kallan Sharpe, Shayla Emmanuel and Lane Towler. The first alternate is Dustin Jolliff and the second alternate is Kiyah Adkins.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
