South Effingham NJROTC cadets are off to a good start

Cadets from South Effingham High School’s NJROTC performed numerous community service projects at the YMCA in Rincon on Aug. 9.

Each cadet worked four hours, accumulating a total of 160 hours for the event.

The cadets split up into groups and worked on many different tasks throughout the day, such as digging up and moving benches, clearing a field of sticks and roots and moving a stage with a group effort.

The cadets finished out the day with a swim at the Y’s pool.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
