Sunny saving for the school board

The Effingham County school board approved a bid to biy a 40 kilovolt-ampere solar panel system using funds from an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant approved earlier this year.

The school system’s energy specialist, Eric Harris, applied for the $300,000 grant as a way to expand his budget to include more energy projects.
The funds are part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and were approved through the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority.

The grant was written for a 30 KVA solar panel. However, the $245,000 bid from Bonitz of Georgia Inc. of Savannah approved by the BoE will be a 40 KVA system. This along with the architectural fees will cost approximately $260,000.
