SAVANNAH — The Armstrong Atlantic State University Department of Art, Music and Theatre (AASU AMT) student theatre troupe, the Masquers, presents “The Imaginary Invalid” by Jean-Baptiste Molière, a satirical comedy on the medical profession of the late 1600s in France, on Feb. 28-29 and March 1-2 (7:30 p.m., 3 p.m. only on March 2) in the Masquers' new temporary home: Masquers Chinese Theatre at Armstrong Center.

“The Imaginary Invalid” was the famous playwright and actor Molière’s last play before he died of a chronic pulmonary infection after dismissing his friends and family’s advice to seek medical help. He wrote the comedy to note the ridiculous nature of the medical profession in the late 1600s in France, and many believe there is much irony in the timing of Molière’s death.

The play focuses on the witty character Argan, a hypochondriac who swindles all his family’s money into the medical business and urges his daughter to marry into the profession to ensure a doctor will always be at his side.

Molière created a brilliant comedic piece with ingenious characters.

AASU Jenkins Theater, home to the Masquers theatre troupe for more than four decades, is in the process of renovation and is scheduled to reopen spring 2009. The facility is being transformed into a state of art multiple theater and camera studio complex.

The new temporary home for the Masquers theatre troupe is the Masquers Chinese Theatre (MCT), located in Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn St.

As an homage to the famous Hollywood Boulevard movie theatre known for red carpet events, “A-list” celebrity sidewalk handprints, and a spectacular Chinese architecture exterior design, the Masquers will create a local Southside Savannah attraction worthy of similar appeal.
