Dreaming of winters end

About this time of year after a long hard winter and lots of butchering the farmers all looked forward to putting in a good crop so that they would do well in the spring and summer at the market. Many in Effingham hauled their produce to the City Market in Savannah prior to its being torn down about 1950.

After a long winter of cutting firewood and trying to keep the animals warm and well fed, the farmer looked forward to warm days. With hunting season done, the farmers daydreamed of warm summer days when they could go fishing with a buddy and bring home a big catch.

Summer would be there before they knew it, but all in all winter seemed to drag out longer than usual some years, especially those with prolonged very cold, damp days.
