Historic Effingham Society has added two new products to their gift shop at 1002 North Pine St. in Springfield.
The new calendar for 2013 is called “School Days.” Our cover features the 1954 Effingham Academy cheerleaders. The long, full skirts, high-necked three-quarter sleeve sweaters and saddle oxfords are in sharp contrast to the outfits of today’s cheerleaders.
Other photos include: Effingham Academy classes of 1928, 1947 and 1948; Effingham County Training School class of 1949 from Guyton; Mrs. Nease’s Marlow fifth-grade class of 1954; Rincon class of 1950 on a tour of the Coca Cola bottling plant; students from Clyo School in the 1940s and 1950s; the 50th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts Springfield Brownie Scout Troop from 1962; a Rincon 1950s baseball team and the 1946 basketball team; the 1954 Effingham Academy FFA and the last Guyton first-grade class in the old Guyton School from 1956.
Our calendar is full of “young” faces including: Wiley Thomas, County Commissioner Reggie Loper, Clerk of Courts Elizabeth Z. Hursey, Deetie Rahn, Judge Preston Exley, Carolyn B. Gnann, Bill Exley, Nolan Lane, the late Naomi Alderman, Barbara R. Scott, the late Marsha N. Usher, state Rep. Jon Burns, Rodell Seckinger, Debbie W. Neidlinger, Bobby Zipperer, Caryl E. Morgan, Wendell Shearouse, Edwin Pace, Ruben Rahn, the late school superintendent Wertz Zipperer, Lona and Terrell Webb, the late Louie Kight, “Tinky” Kennedy and so many many more.
Laurel Hill Lutheran Church near Clyo, founded in 1862, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in November. The commemorative ornament is color tinted on the ivory background and is beautiful. Other ornaments including Jerusalem Lutheran Church, the Old Effingham Courthouse, Methodist Tabernacle and Old Jail in Springfield in the Barlow series are available for sale.
Calendars are $5 each. Many calendars are still available from years past at half price. The Laurel Hill Ornament retails for $16.
The Effingham Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Because of decreasing funds, the hours of museum operation have been recently reduced.
