The worlds busiest airport lost power on Sunday, but that didnt stop Chick-fil-A from going to work.

The family-owned restaurant chain, which is never open on Sundays due to its religious roots, made an exception to its policy this past weekend, serving thousands of people who were left stranded at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.

More than 1,000 flights were cancelled and another 200 were delayed from a power outage at the airport, according to NBC News. Passengers were left stranded in the dark both inside the airport and in their airplanes, as flights were grounded and not allowed to leave.

The city of Atlanta offered people who were stranded overnight the option to stay at the Georgia International Convention Center, where Chick-fil-A provided food.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said the restaurant chain served nearly 2,000 meals on Sunday.

Social media praised Chick-fil-A for helping the needy.

Chick-fil-A often does not budge for its policy. As Sports Illustrated reported, the restaurants new outpost at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was only open for one game during this years NFL season. It happened last week during a Thursday night matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints.

The restaurant remained open for all but three of the Atlanta United soccer team's home games, which are also played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Those three MLS home games were on Sunday, according to Sports Illustrated.

Chick-fil-A remained open this fall for college football games and concerts, too, held on days other than the traditional Christian sabbath.

Chick-fil-A made headlines earlier this year for rescuing an elderly couple trapped during Hurricane Harvey in Texas, according to the Deseret News. The Spencers reached out to their local Chick-fil-A to help save them from their flooded home. The restaurant chain sent a Jet Ski to rescue to the couple.
