Infographic: Google developing a smart contact lens for diabetics
contact lens for diabetics

Google is partnering with Novartis’ Alcon eye-care division to develop a smart contact lens to help diabetics track their blood sugar levels. The accompanying infographic shows how the lens would measure glucose in tears and transmit that information to an app.

According to Forbes, the development could open up the door to potentially billions of dollars in revenue through the digital health care market. The Motley Fool reports that a smart lens could completely replace glucose monitors that require multiple pinpricks a day, as well as other health care possibilities beyond diabetes, since human tears contain various lipids, proteins, mucins, electrolytes and other molecules that could be monitored.
