Name one teacher who made a difference in your life.

For most people, at least one or two teachers sparked their interest in learning or helped them understand themselves better.

Yet many college graduates these days are steering clear of teaching, which is bad news for students.

Frank Bruni reported for The New York Times that enrollment in teaching programs dropped 30 percent between 2010 and 2014 and that 40 percent of teachers will leave the field within five years.

There are quite a few reasons teaching is becoming a less valued profession, including how much teachers get paid and how little respect they get.

The political battles over education, along with the shifting vogues about whats best, have left many teachers feeling like pawns and punching bags, Bruni wrote. And while thats no reason not to implement promising new approaches or to shrink from experimentation, it puts an onus on policymakers and administrators to bring generous measures of training, support and patience to the task.
