Know Your Neighbor: Jackson (Jake) Zeigler
Title: Effingham County Communications Manager
Know Your Neighbor

(What you won’t find on social media … even if you are approved as a friend)

  • Born: Tallahassee, Florida
  • Status: Happily married! I met my wife line-dancing at Tallahassee’s beloved “Stetsons on the Moon.” We have been inseparable since (21 years goes fast!)
  • Alma Mater: Florida State University - Go Noles!
  • What’s on TV: I rarely turn on the T.V., but when I do, it is always a good murder mystery on Netflix.
  • What I drive: Toyota Tacoma. I like the utility a pickup offers, but shopped for a looooong time for a vehicle that was practical in price, size, and park-a-bility. Tacoma for the win!
  • Favorite childhood cartoon: “Doug. He is my man. Just a kid trying to figure out his life, bangin’ on a trashcan and strummin’ on a streetlight.
  • Actor that would play me in a movie: My niece says Pedro Pascal, so let’s go with that.
  • What I’m reading: I just finished “Camino Ghost” by John Grisham (I love a good Low Country Courtroom drama) and just started “Hail Mary” by Andy Weir (I also love a good end-of-the-world science fiction novel).
  • App I can’t live without (no judgment): Reddit! It still remains the wild west of the internet. You never know what you will stumble upon on Reddit.
  • Worst habit: Second-guessing myself. My gut is usually correct.
  • On my office walls: Nothing, we just moved in! The County, Effingham Herald and Effingham Artists just joined forces to hold a photography contest featuring citizen-submitted photos of this beautiful county. I plan to choose my favorite to adorn my office walls. Thanks to everyone who submitted!
  • I would love to meet ….. One of the original Salzburgers. I came to learn that my family were some of the original European settlers of this land. I would love to talk to them about what life was like then, and how far we have come.
  • Favorite go-to comfort food: Anything Mexican. I love the variety of flavors…. And the spice! Chimichangas or fish tacos are my go-to.
  • Favorite sports team: Florida State University - Go Noles!
  • First thing I do in the morning …. Let’s be real… go to the bathroom! I’m 40 and lucky if I make it through the night at this point.
  • Superstitions: The ‘Noles won’t win if I watch them play. I watched waaaay too many games last year.
  • Most used emoji: Smiley face! Everyone needs more smiles.
  • First job: I worked in the mailroom for the State Department of Florida. My only job was to “black out” social security numbers on workers compensation claims…for 8 hours a day. SO….MUCH…FUN
  • What I like about Effingham County: Great schools, low crime, friendly people, and a fast-growing assortment of recreation spots. My family and I left Orlando, Florida seeking a home with a sense of community and we definitely found it in Effingham County.
  • What song always gets me singing (or dancing): Anything by Steve Winwood. I named my truck “Valerie” after his song.
  • Favorite value in others: Kindness and empathy. This world is full of beautiful people, each with their own struggles and perspectives. We all could spend a lot more time empathizing with our fellow brothers and sisters instead of ostracizing them.
  • Advice I’d give my teenage self: Lead with your heart, not your head. It will never steer you wrong.
  • Talent I’d most like to have: I dabble with blues guitar but have never transitioned from intermediate to professional. I would love to shred like Joe Bonamassa.
  • Dream date: For our first date, I took my wife on a kayaking trip down the Ochlockonee River in Tallahassee, we had a picnic on a private beach along the river. I think it worked out quite well!
  • Attribute I like best about myself: Understanding. I constantly challenge myself to learn from others and to consider that nothing in the world is black-and-white and holding on to firm views for the sake of ego is a dangerous game.
  • And least …. Laziness. There are a lot of weeds in my garden right now, and they aren’t going to pick themselves!
  • My hero: My grandfather, Leslie Hugh Zeigler. He was a Word War II prisoner of war, survived the Bataan Death March and years of enslavement. After rescue, he returned to the states to live a quiet and humble life - appreciative of every meal and every sunrise.
  • My bucket list: Take my wife to the Mediterranean. She has always wanted to go and I would love to make that dream happen.
  • My motto: Serving others is the best way to serve yourself.
