Winter wildlife

The Savannah Wildlife Refuge, which covers 31,551 acres in Chatham and Effingham counties in Georgia, and Jasper County in South Carolina, was teeming with activity Saturday morning. Alligators, a wide variety of birds and turtles were out in the sunshine on a 70-degree day. Frequently, photographers can take outstanding pictures without leaving their vehicle on Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive, which meanders through four miles of dikes. These photographs were taken by Herald editor Mark Lastinger.
