SPRINGFIELD — Zebrandon Gant is finally a state champion.

After two years of finishing in the top three in the state wrestling tournament, the senior from Effingham County would not be denied. At the Macon Centreplex on Saturday, he defeat Taylor Wilson of Richmond Hill in the Class AAAAA 195-pound weight class in the title match.

Rebels coach Nelson Guggino attributed Gant’s success to the losses absorbed in years past and his willingness to overcome adversity.

“Many young kids would rather be average at something because it is easier to do so,” Guggino said. “Zebrandon did not do that. He decided after last year’s loss in the finals that he was going to do whatever it took to take that next step.
“He did just that. He practiced hard during the summer, went to Ohio camp and was a leader all season. No one deserved this more than he does. He is a special kid that has left his mark on Effingham wrestling that will be here for a long time.”
