Special to the Herald

The Effingham Retired Educators Association (EREA) Banquet was held Sept. 11 at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center.

Brenda Barrow shared “The Culture of the Moment”, a chapter in former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s book, Rare, Medium, or Done Well: Make the Most of Your Life.

Susan Hartzog and Aileene Tuten provided the musical entertainment with Fifty Nifty United States, Yankee Doodle Dandy and God Bless America.

Next up were the EREA cheerleaders who encouraged everyone to join Georgia Retired Educators Association (GREA). Their spirits were high as they showed everyone it’s the best $2 spent each month and it won’t be missed, not one cent!

AMBA representative Lisa McKenzie was also on hand to share many benefits that come with being a GREA member. Carla Luke, art teacher at Ebenezer Elementary, was recognized as this year’s EREA Scholarship recipient. She was praised for continuing her education and the difference she’s making in the lives of her students.

The EREA was acknowledged as a Unit of Distinction by Area Director Dr. Connie Cooper and encouraged to continue striving for excellence during the coming year.

EREA will once again complete three service projects: one at the school level headed by Patsy Zeigler and Sandra Moore; one at the community level headed by Sylvia Arnsdorff; and one at the state level headed by Kimberly Johnson.

Dr. Henrietta Gray, past president of GREA, was the main speaker and it was quite fitting that her speech and the inspiration were on the same theme.

A brief business meeting was held and many raffle prizes were given out throughout the banquet. All retired Effingham Educators are invited join the Effingham Retired Educators Association.
