Initial autopsy reports indicate natural causes in the death of an Effingham County Jail inmate who was found unresponsive in her jail cell by a detention officer.

Carol Michelle Mckuhen, 38, was pronounced dead when EMS arrived at the jail shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.

The autopsy was conducted at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab Monday in Savannah. The investigation is still ongoing by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI.

A coroner’s inquest will take place at a later date after all reports are complete. This is required by state law with any custodial death.

Mckuhen was under medical care of the jail’s health care provider, Transform Health.

She had been held in the Effingham County Jail since Jan. 23 on probation violation charges.
