Burn patient upgraded
Seckinger now listed in serious condition

One of the most seriously hurt workers in the Imperial Sugar refinery explosion has been upgraded from critical condition, according to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

Paul Seckinger, who was burned over 80 percent of his body, was upgraded from critical to serious condition Monday.

Seckinger was one of 20 patients taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center after the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth exploded Feb. 7.

Of the patients remaining at the burn center, two are still in critical condition and another is in good condition at the Doctors Hospital Rehab Unit.

Of the 20 patients brought in, 11 have been discharged from the burn center.

Two men are in custody after police say one stole an ambulance and led officers on a chase from Rincon to Port Wentworth Monday afternoon. The driver, Dwayne Simmons, 56, of Savannah, faces multiple felony charges. The passenger, Georgell Brown, 51, was charged with loitering after fleeing the scene of an earlier crash. The pursuit ended when the ambulance crashed near Highway 21.
