To improve your career options, Georgia Southern University invites you to enroll in the fiber optic networking short courses running Aug. 9-15 in Savannah.

Running Monday through Wednesday, the basic course, Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT), prepares you for the broad-based Fiber Optic Association (FOA) exam that requires verified skills in fiber optics and covers technology, components, installation and testing.

The CFOT certification exam is given and graded at the end of the class and included in the course fee. The FOA reports that most CFOTs work in the fiber optics industry as contractors or installers. Consultants, network designers and managers, component manufacturing technicians, estimators and trainers are also expected to have such credentials.

Training continues on Thursday and Friday with the Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T) course and on Saturday and Sunday with the Certified Fiber Optics Specialist/Splicing (CFOS/S) course. Both courses end with the related FOA certification exam, included in the fee.

Each course fee also includes study materials, CD, and textbook “The Fiber Optic Technician’s Manual,” 3rd edition by Jim Hayes. The CFOT course
fee is $700; each of the others is $675. You must have passed the CFOT or have at least one year of installation experience to take the Specialist courses.

Daily coursework involves hands-on activities, discussion and chapter tests. All three courses run 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Center.
