SPRINGFIELD — The Effingham County Board of Commissioners paved a way to make local traffic improvements during its July 29 meeting.

The commissioners approved a resolution calling for a referendum on the Nov. 3 election ballot for a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Tax, or TSPLOST.

TSPLOST, a one-percent sales tax which must be approved by the voters and can only be used for transportation in Effingham County, is projected to produce up to $45 million over five years. If approved, the sales tax would begin on April 1, 2021, and funds would be distributed among the county and the cities of Guyton, Rincon and Springfield based on population, as determined by the U.S. Census.

Ninety-three of Georgia’s 159 counties have a sales tax designated for transportation, including 24 that use the single-county TSPLOST.
