Computer porn guilty plea leads to 10-year term
0803 butler mark
Mark Butler

A Vidalia man arrested last year on charges of Internet crimes against children pled guilty on two counts Wednesday in an Effingham County courtroom.

Mark Butler was sentenced to seven years in prison and three years of probation on one charge of obscene Internet conduct and three years to serve on a charge of distributing nudity or sexual conduct. He faced a maximum sentence of 33 years.

Butler turned himself into the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office last year, after the ECSO discovered Butler was living near Birmingham, Ala.

According to the ECSO, Butler was communicating with who he thought was a 13-year-old girl on the Internet. He was, in fact, having Internet contact with an undercover detective. Butler was showing inappropriate material via a Web cam.

He was indicted Dec. 3, 2012, and he was arraigned Jan. 2 on three charges, including computer pornography.
