An Effingham County prisoner walked away from a Liberty County road-work detail Monday afternoon.
Chaney Tyler Hankins, 23, was last seen on Fort Morris Road in Sunbury. He was wearing white pants, with a blue stripe running down the pant legs, orange shirt and black boots. He is described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, about 175 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.
Hankins is an inmate of the Effingham County Prison, said Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes.
“We are 99 percent sure he is no longer in Liberty County,” Sikes said.
Sheriff’s Maj. Jeffrey Hein said Hankins walked away from the work detail at Fort Morris Historic Site around 2:15 p.m. He said Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 officers were working to establish a track of Hankins and officers from several agencies, including a Georgia State Patrol helicopter, set up a several-mile perimeter in an effort to apprehend Hankins.
Hein added that he understood there were five to seven inmates, including Hankins, on the work detail, accompanied by one corrections officer.
Hankins was convicted in November in Bartow County for a 2010 aggravated assault and a 2011 theft by taking. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Other charges listed on his escape-information sheet include obstruction of law enforcement, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.
