Griffin awaits sentence

A Springfield man is awaiting sentencing after an Effingham County jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of a toddler.
 
A jury took only two hours to deliberate on the fate of Lester Casey Griffin, who was accused of killing Dylan Helmey by striking the child in the chest. Griffin, charged with malice murder, was found guilty Thursday of the reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter. 
 
He also was found guilty of seven other charges, including felony murder/cruelty to a child, felony murder/aggravated battery, felony murder/aggravated assault, cruelty to children, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.
