The last night of July was a busy one for the Rincon Police Department as they conducted safety checks between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. at West 9th Street and Howard and Fort Howard and Weisenbaker Roads.

The traffic stops resulted in eight arrests, all misdemeanors. There were four arrests for driving under the influence, one for possession of marijuana (less than 1 oz.), one for driving with a suspended license, and two for underage drinking. Two citations were given for unlicensed drivers; one for open container of alcohol; one for no insurance; one for expired registration; and one for no seat belt.

Rincon Police Chief Mike Bohannon said the safety check was an effort for the police department to be proactive and “to get unsafe drivers off the roadway.”

He said the department would be conducting more of these safety checks at later dates and at various locations within the city. With Rincon’s population growing, they are seeing an increase in traffic volume.
