Two teenagers are in custody in the Effingham County Jail following their arrest Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies observed a pickup at a high rate of speed on Courthouse Road, ECSO Detective David Ehsanipoor said. Marcus Christopher Lafferty, 17, of Rincon, was driving the truck and Ridge Yates, 17, of Garden City, was in the truck as well. The truck also was failing to maintain its lane.

After making a traffic stop, deputies discovered Lafferty was under the influence and the vehicle had been taken from a business on Bourne Avenue in Garden City.

Lafferty and Yates were charged with theft by receiving stolen property.

In a separate incident, sheriff’s deputies arrested an Effingham County High School student for possession of marijuana Friday. Patrick Bracken, 17, was discovered to have marijuana in his possession by school officials.

He was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance on school property, which is a felony.

He was released from the Effingham County Jail on bond.
