Two Springfield teens were arrested Monday night after an Effingham County Sheriff’s Office investigator saw them kicking a puppy.

Ashton Wallace, 18, and Jerrell Barnes, 17, were arrested after the deputy saw them kicking a small dog back and forth to each other on 1st Street Extension in Springfield, not far from the sheriff’s office. Wallace and Barnes were charged with cruelty to animals.

The puppy was extremely mangy and dirty and had hardly any hair, according to ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor. The dog was taken to the Effingham County Animal Shelter by the ECSO’s Humane Enforcement Division.
