The driver of a pickup who fell into the Savannah River has been rescued from the river and taken to a Savannah hospital, according to authorities.

Earlier this afternoon, a truck carrying porta-potties was in a northbound lane of I-95 in Effingham County. A tractor-trailer apparently swerved to avoid hitting the first truck, but the Ford F-350 was knocked off the bridge spanning the Savannah River and into the water.

The driver eventually was rescued and taken by boat to Abercorn Landing, where he was flown by helicopter to a Savannah hospital for treatment.

Emergency personnel are close to completing work at the scene, and the accident remains under investigation.
