An investigation is under way after an inmate was found deceased in the Effingham County Jail early Monday morning.

At approximately 1 a.m., a detention officer discovered the body Carol Michelle Mckuhen, 38, of Statesboro, unresponsive in her jail cell.

Mckuhen was being held in the Effingham County Jail for probation violation. She had been in the jail since Jan. 23. Mckuhen also was undergoing treatment by the jail’s medical services provider, Transform Health.

EMS was called to the jail, where Mckuhen was pronounced deceased. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate, which is standard protocol with any inmate death that occurs in custody.

An autopsy was scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah on Monday afternoon to determine the cause of death.
