SPRINGFIELD -- During its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday night, the Effingham County Board of Education approved a call for a special election to fill the District 2 vacancy.

The election  will be conducted Nov. 2 in conjunction with other Effingham County races.

Troy Alford resigned as District 2’s representative last month after spending 17 years on the board. The move was necessitated by the promotion of his son, Judd. to assistant principal at South Effingham High School.

A state law enacted in 2009 prohibits school board members and superintendents from having immediate family members in high-ranking positions in the districts they serve.
