Former Effingham County sheriff succumbs at 79

Former Effingham County Sheriff, Van Edward Findley, 79, died Wednesday morning.

Findley was born in Emmanuel County and grew up in Savannah but Effingham County was his home for the past 39 years. He served proudly for four years in the U.S. Marines.  He was a longtime member of Rincon First Christian Church and had served there as a deacon.

His law enforcement career began in Port Wentworth as a police officer and as a deputy sheriff with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. He was appointed and sworn in as sheriff of Effingham County on Nov. 22, 1983. He serveduntil his retirement in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Findley; sisters, Frances Allen, Peggy Moore (Ed), and Vicki Lang (David); brothers, Jerry Findley (Judy) and Larry Findley (Jane Payne); sister-in-law, Ginger Shore; brother-in-law, Claude Shore; many precious nieces and nephews; and many close and loving friends.
Visitation is Saturday from 10 a.m.-11:45 a.m. at Rincon First Christian Church.

The funeral is set for noon with the interment atGuyton Cemetery.
