Guyton officials confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the fire chief and assistant fire chief have been relieved of their duties.

Longtime fire chief David Starling and assistant chief Mike Crager were terminated Tuesday morning.

Starling and Crager were put on administrative leave last week, according to city clerk Lauree Morris, pending an investigation. The investigation is ongoing. Guyton Public Safety Director Kelphie Lundy is conducting the investigation.

“We still have volunteer firefighters. The people of Guyton are still protected if there is a fire,” Morris said.

Gary Jarriel will serve as interim fire chief.

Starling and Pendleton have the option of appealing their termination to the mayor and council.
