One of the newest members of the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office already has made a mark.

AJ, a Belgian Malinois and the newest member of the K9 unit, located a missing boater late Sunday afternoon near the Effingham-Bulloch county line. Sheriff’s deputies, state Department of Natural Resources personnel and a helicopter from the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department searched for Joseph Hodges, 36, of Savannah.

Hodges had been reported missing Sunday around 11 a.m. The small boat he and Scott Jenkins were in capsized in the Ogeechee River on Saturday evening, Jenkins told authorities. The two men apparently had been drinking and Hodges may have been taking Xanax as well.
