SPRINGFIELD -- On Thursday afternoon, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office sent deputies to the 100 block of Greene Street in Rincon in reference to a welfare check. 

Deputies had good reason to believe the resident of the home intended to harm himself. They made entry after they were unable to make contact. 

Upon their entry, they heard a single gunshot. 

A man was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to assist in the investigation since ECSO originally made entry into the house.
