STILLWELL — A new fire station has been dedicated to the memory of one of Effingham County’s fallen soldiers.
About 100 people turned out Feb. 25 to watch Effingham County officials dedicate the facility in honor U.S. Army 1st Lt. Henry Mouzon Gnann, who was killed in action in Vietnam on Oct. 14, 1969, at the age of 23.
Ralph Gnann, Henry Gnann’s brother, donated the Stillwell-Clyo Road property for Stillwell Fire Station, which is part of a strategy to have one station within five miles of every Effingham County resident.
A plaque recognizing Henry Gnann was unveiled during the ceremony. In addition, In County Vietnam Veterans of Effingham County presented a flag to Fire Chief Clint Hodges that will be displayed inside the building.
Gnann’s honors included a National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a Bronze Star.
