Barton Alderman handed his gavel to Jeff Northway on Tuesday night, as Northway took his position as mayor of Springfield.
Alderman declined to run for re-election, and Northway won the seat in the November vote.

“I am looking forward to working with city council,” Northway said. “Certainly we can work together to make it better for everyone in the city. This will be a team, with no one more important than the other.”

Northway also thanked Alderman for his years of service to the Springfield City Council.

“Job well done,” Northway said.

Council member Charles Hinely also thanked Alderman for his service to the city and council.

“We really appreciate it,” he said.

Alderman was elected to council in 2001 and was appointed mayor during his first term. He won election to the seat in 2005.

“I appreciate the council for all these years,” he said.

Hinely, Jeff Ambrose and Kenny Usher also took their oaths of office for council on Monday night. All three won re-election to their posts in November.
