ATLANTA -- The Georgia General Assembly delegation from Effingham County announced that a project was awarded to the county by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The award total is around $8 million and will address 0.8 miles of widening and reconstruction for additional lanes on Old River Road (CR 310).

Additionally, this funding includes construction of a bridge and approaches over I‐16/Ga. Hwy 404. The anticipated completion date for this project is Oct.r 31, 2020. Sen. Jack Hill (R-Reidsville), Rep. Jon Burns (R-Newington) and Rep. Bill Hitchens (R- Rincon) made the announcement.

“I look forward to the completion of this important project in Effingham County,” Hill said. “By investing in our existing infrastructure, while at the same time adding lanes and bridges, we are making our citizens’ commute not only safer but easier as well. As we head into the upcoming session, I will work with GDOT to bring additional projects to Effingham County and the surrounding area.”

“I’m grateful to GDOT for their assistance with funding this transportation infrastructure improvement in Effingham County,” Burns said. “Safety improvements for the traveling public and efficient access to Effingham’s Industrial Park will be a very beneficial investment for the state.”

“I certainly appreciate GDOT’s decision to upgrade this 50 year-old bridge and interchange, which initially connected to a dirt road on one side when it was constructed,” Hitchens said. “It is on the I-16 interchange in Effingham County and is in close proximity to an area with significant population growth, a relatively new industrial area and a dramatic increase in traffic volume. This project will greatly enhance traffic efficiency and safety for both local residents and the increasing number of commercial vehicles that also use this interchange.”
