Authorities have identified a man killed in a Saturday night house fire on Courthouse Road.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews responded to the residence on a report of a fully engulfed fire in the 700 block of Courthouse Road. Witnesses told deputies a male occupant lived inside and was unaccounted for.

Sheriff’s investigators maintained the scene throughout the night and located the body of an adult male in the back bedroom at daybreak Sunday morning.

The man has been identified as Charles Thompson, 52, of Springfield.

Initial autopsy results indicate Thompson died of smoke inhalation and heat. The fire appears to have been electrical according to the state fire marshal.

Thompson’s body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation state crime lab in Savannah to determine the identity and cause of death.
