The Effingham County sanitation department made a pitch to Springfield to see if the city wants to pitch in with the Great American Cleanup.

Connie Burns, director of the Effingham County sanitation department and the Keep Effingham Beautiful director, said there are many things that people and groups can do as part of the nationwide effort.

The Great American Cleanup, which is held from March 1-May 31, is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. Keep America Beautiful is a national organization that tries to encourage individuals in taking greater responsibility for taking care of the environment, Burns said.
