SPRINGFIELD — The Effingham County wrestling team advanced to the state tournament in Macon after going 1-1 in the area duals Monday.
The Rebels punched their ticket to the tourney after defeating Brunswick fell short of securing the No. 1 seed after losing to Richmond Hill.
Rebels head coach Nelson Guggino had one word to describe his team’s performance.
“Sloppy.”
“We’ve only wrestled once this week and we had two optional practices, but we have older kids that should be doing better.”
Zebrandon Gant, at 195 pounds, thinks the younger graplers on the team are still learning to adapt to high school competition.
“We have a very young team,” Gant said. “We have maybe four seniors, three juniors and the rest are freshmen. It’s a growing process.”
The Rebels played host to a small field that included Brunswick and Richmond Hill. The tournament was postponed last week due to inclement weather and Guggino said the three-day delay proved to be costly for this team.
