Rincon makes plans to deliver post office to city hall site

The city of Rincon hopes to bring its old post office to a new home soon.

Council members agreed to move forward with plans for moving the old post office to city hall property, perhaps to the front right-hand corner of the tract, according to City Manager Michael Phillips.

The city will pay for the materials and local builder Freddy Long will perform the work on a donated basis, Phillips said. The city has set aside $25,000 for the work.

“It is intended to be as close to what it looked like as possible,” Phillips said.

Also, Verizon’s Rincon location will be on the move again.

Rincon City Council members approved a site plan for the building to go next to Lowe’s.

Work on the new building is expected to start in August.

After Verizon merged with Alltel, Verizon moved from its location on Highway 21 near McCall Road to the old Alltel spot in the Goshen Commercial Park.

“It doesn’t fit their size requirement,” said Rincon city planner LaMeisha Hunter, “and they don’t have enough parking.”

Their current location is 1,500 square feet and their new store will be 4,200 square feet.

Rincon firefighters could be in line to receive air packs as part of their gear.

City council members approved Fire Chief Corey Rahn’s request for the equipment after he told city council members his department will need as many as 46 new air packs within the next five years. Air packs have a shelf life of 15 years, the chief said.

“We’ve got several air packs that are outdated and out of compliance,” Rahn said.

The chief anticipated buying new air packs, which are approximately $5,000 apiece, next year. But he has money available this year, since the city won’t be spending $300,000 to erect a third fire station. The city had plans to build a third station on Goshen Road.

A complete air pack comes with two air bottles, with one used as an exchange. Firefighters also are mandated to have their own masks and must be fitted for them, Rahn added.

The department has six air packs that are compliant under 2002 tests that another department might be interested, Rahn said.
