SAVANNAH – An Effingham County man was seriously injured on New Year’s Eve when a minivan ran over him in downtown Savannah.

Patrick Ford, 39, of Rincon suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung and was taken to Memorial University Medical Center for treatment, according to the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.

Ford was walking on the sidewalk in front of the Firestone store on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at West Broughton Street around 11 p.m. Tuesday and he fell, said SCMPD spokesman Julian Miller.

He was run over by a minivan that a 56-year-old Savannah woman was backing in to or out of a parking space, Miller said.

“I do not know why he fell,” Miller said, adding, “It was New Year’s Eve.”

The SCMPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team continues to investigate the accident.
