RINCON, Ga. — Earlier today, a devastating townhouse fire at 113 Towne Park Drive completely destroyed one unit and caused significant damage to two others. Rincon Fire Department, aided by Effingham County firefighters, responded swiftly to contain the blaze, Effingham County Fire Chief Clinton Hodges said.

A 20-year-old woman was rescued in critical condition, initially taken to Effingham Hospital for stabilization, and later flown to a burn center in Augusta. Pets were also rescued from nearby units, and the Red Cross is assisting displaced residents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Before emergency personnel arrived, two local workers — Hugh Pirkle and Brandy Durden, employed at the nearby Parkview complex—witnessed the fire and were told a disabled woman remained inside. They attempted a rescue, reaching halfway up the stairs before being forced back by heavy smoke and heat. Pirkle made a second attempt, showing extraordinary courage and selflessness, according to Gena Sullivan, director of communications for the Rincon Police Department.

“Our community is deeply grateful for the heroic actions of these bystanders and the professionalism of our first responders,” said Mayor Kevin Exley. “Our citizens are resilient, and our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.”
